| HISTORY
      OF MALANG REGENCY BIRTH DAY

  Many
years ago before Malang became the second biggest city in East
Java, Malang used to be the centre of government of the Kanjuruhan
and Singosari Kingdom. Here are some names of places that could support the history
      of Malang Birth Day.

        Apart from the above evidences,
there are still many other evidences supporting the history of
Malang such as: the name of hills, rivers and archaeological
remains (temples stupas, gates, and many others) Some centres
of government that used to lie here, are:Kanjuruhan,
written in the inscription 760 AD, now has changed into Kajuron
        (a place near Dinoyo).
        Balandit,
written in the inscription 929 AD, now has changed into Belandit
(a place in the eastern part of Singosari ).
        Turryan, written
in the inscription 929 AD, now has changed into Turen (a place
        in the southeast of Malang).
        Panawijyan,
written in the inscription in 943 AD, now has changed to Polowijen,
the name of a Ward Administrative unit in Malang Municipality.
        Hantang, written
in the inscription 1135 AD, now has changed into Ngantang (45
        kms west of Malang).
        Katinden,
written in the inscription on 1395 AD, now still uses that name
up to the present time. (15 kms north of Malang).
Mandaragiri,
written in the Javanese History Book "Negarakertagama",
is the name of a hill that is now known as "Mandaraka",
belonging to Singosari Sub District. (+ 9 kms north of Malang).

        Kanjuruhan Kingdom, 8 th century
AD that was centered around Dinoyo village now.
        Singosari Kingdom, 13 th century
AD that was centered around Singosari Sub District now.And here, some other evidences to support that the centres of
government have ever existed in Malang.
When King Sindok from Mataram
Hindu Kingdom governed, he left many important inscriptions in
        Malang.
        When King Jayabaya from Kediri
Kingdom governed Ngantang (in the west of Malang) became an important
area for his power to rule his kingdom.
        In the government of Majapahit
dynasty, some important government officials were always stationed
in Malang. The names of the important officials are among others:a. Mahamisi Diah Savitri at Kabalon (now: Kebalen)
 b. Singa-Wikrama-Wardhana Diah Suraprabawa at Tumapel, Singosari.
 c. Rajasa-Wardhana-Dewi Diah Seripura at Singosari.
  In
the following era, Malang regency still became an important place
when the government of Mataram Kingdom took hold of the area.
There fore Malang has been the largest regency in East Java and
since then the development of Malang regency has increased well. Talking about Malang Regency History the name of Regency itself
has actually been known since there was a regular government.
In this case, we have some reasons to support it.
 1. We found the central government activities along the Brantas
      river.
 2. We found the other central government activities at the other
      places in Malang.
 3. The growth of Malang Regency population is the result of the
historical l process, from 8 th century up to now.
 4. The birth day of Malang Regency was closely connected with
the time when the oldest central government was found in Malang.
 Upon the above reasons, the
birthday of Malang Regency was finally discovered and appointed,
      whith the following criteria:
        The historical connection
of the beginning of the real government and the cultural development
of Malang Regency it self from time to time.
        The significant thing to support
the birth of Malang itself based on the oldest historical event
from the development growth to be the real Malang Regency as
        what we see now.
       Historical events have to be
supported by an authentic historical source. That is the inscription.
It is by no meant no daubs, for:1. An inscription is issued by a king, deputy king, or official
      institution.
 2. An inscription, as an official document must be permanent.
 3. An inscription, must be made in its era or dynasty.
 4. An inscription must be a primary source.
 History of Malang Regency could
be revealed through the Dinoyo inscription 760 AD as the primary
official document to support the birth of Malang before a new
inscription was discovered on December 6, 1986, which is so far
not yet revealed.According to the inscription. we conclude that the 8 th century
was the beginning of the existence of Malang Regency Government~
because King Gajayana began to rule his kingdom in Malang for
the first time at that time.
From the Dinoyo inscription' we notice that the inscription used
the "Candra Sengkala" or 'Cronogram" Calender,
and stated that the birth day of Malang Regency was on Jum'at
Legi (sweet Friday) November 28, 760 AD. (L. Damaes: "Studed'
      Epigraphy d'Indonesia IV. 1952").
