Wild, excited screams echo down the pristine hallways of the Geology Museum in Bandung. But these playful shouts are nothing disturbing; in fact they can be seen as proof of the joy and adventure that can come from learning.
Upon entering one particular display it becomes immediately obvious what the excitement is all about.

The tourists are lucky to get so close to Bromo, Indonesia, and from a distance it’s a breathtaking view.
It’s 3am, but the tourists begin to shake off the drowsiness and get ready to see the sun rise over Mount Bromo. Many of them are already on the truck ready for the journey.
While dozens of tourists think they’re surely the first to arrive at the rim of the vast, sunken crater containing Bromo and its two little sisters, a few dozen locals are already waiting, selling hot drinks, food and souvenirs and renting out warm jackets. (more…)

At least 105 hectares of mangrove forests have been damaged because of severe daily erosion, from Sugihwaras village in Jenu district to Sukolilo village in Bancar district. The recent collapse of a long dike, which protected the forest area, has contributed to the severe erosion. (more…)

Hearing Sidoarjo, one immediately thinks of the mudflow disaster which has left thousands homeless, buried many villages and factories, destroyed the environment and has sunk the province’s reputation as a batik industrial center.
Amidst the intensive public relations stunt by Lapindo Brantas, Inc., to turn the disaster and the giant mud reservoir into a mudflow tourist resort, the local government has sought to empower the people by gradually reviving traditional home industries — including batik. Because of the two-year-old disaster, not only have basic public infrastructures collapsed, but many people have lost their jobs. (more…)

Hanging on the wall of a cramped kampong house in Singosari, East Java, is a set of grainy, soft-focus photos of family ancestors.
Sunshine, termites, damp and age haven’t treated them well, and the pictures started with a disadvantage.
In the early days of photography the rules were rigid. You had to dress formal and look severe. Today it’s difficult to sense the soul behind the monochrome stare, humanity in the flat featureless features. (more…)
