Jakarta, Indonesia (AHN) - The navies of Indonesia and the United States on Monday began a five-day joint exercise dubbed “Naval Engagement Activity or NEA 2008″ in the East Java Province.
Indonesia’s commander of the Eastern Fleet Command Commodore Slamet Yulistiyono launched the exercise at the Eastern Fleet Command Warship training center in Ujung, Surabaya of East Java.
The exercise involves 100 U.S. Navy and 150 Indonesian Navy personnel. The U.S. deployed four warships, including the USS Tortuga, Ford, Jarret and USNS Safeguard for the war games.
The U.S. Commander Task Force (CTF) 73 Rear Admiral Nora Tyson was attended the launch.
“The NEA joint exercise between the Indonesian and the US navies has been conducted for several times and it was proven to benefit both navies,” Yulistiyono said.
“Most importantly, the joint exercise is aimed to improve soldiers’ professionalism while enhancing bilateral diplomatic ties,” he adds.
The five-day exercise will include, among others, Centrixs test aboard the USS Tortuga, health symposium, military observer, US Coast Guard training, diving in Surabaya western sailing route and marines’ training at Karang Tekok, Situbondo.
