Whirlwind damages hundreds of houses in Madiun

March 31st, 2008

Madiun (ANTARA News) - A whirlwind attack was reported to have destroyed at 200 houses in Pajaran village, Madiun district, East Java, on Saturday evening.

Two of the total damaged houses could no longer be used a shelter, as the whirlwind had levelled them down to the ground.

Beside damaging the houses, the whirlwind also uprooted some trees down, thus blocking the vehicle to pass certain roads.

Lamini (36), a resident in Pajaran village said the whirlwind came at a sudden and blowed so hard. She and members of her family immediately sought for a shelter to prevent them from the attack.

“At a sudden, anything went down. I and my husband including the children escaped from the rubble and went out of the house,” she said while sweeping her house of the rubbles.

According to her, when the whirlwind came, we could only save members of the family. All our belongings in the house were totally damaged.

“After the whirlwind subsided, the rain poured down heavily. All items in the house were damaged and wet by the rain,” she said.

Under the current condition, she only hoped for possible assistance from donators to enable her to renovate her damaged house.

In the meantime, Pepe village head Wagiono said based on the inventory data, it was recorded that there were 200 houses damaged by the whirlwind.

This was the first attack of the whirlwind which has damaged hundreds of houses, so that many residents panicked and went out to save themselve. However no casualties were reported, he said.
