Warm welcome for little lizards

A clutch of 14 rare Komodo Dragons has been hatched at an Indonesian zoo.

It follows earlier success at the Surabaya Zoo in East Java with 13 eggs, and brings the zoo’s collection of the reptiles to 41.
The Varanus Komodoensis or Komodo Dragon is the world’s largest lizard, and can only be found living in the wild on arid volcanic islands in Indonesia.

They are listed as an endangered species, with fewer than 5,000 left.

Babies weigh about five to six ounces each, but when fully grown they can be more than three metres (10 ft) and weigh up to 100 kg (220 lbs).

The lizards regularly prey on animals as large as pigs, deer and even adult water buffalo, and will eat anything they can overpower - including other Komodo Dragons.
