Satu Suro di Kelenteng Cokro

SURABAYA - Kelenteng Hong San Ko Tee, Jalan Cokroaminoto, kemarin (10/1) mengadakan doa bersama menyambut tahun baru Jawa, 1 Suro 1941 Saka.

Beberapa harapan pun disampaikan.

“Baik ragawi maupun rohani perlu disucikan kembali. Inilah saat yang tepat,” ujar Ketua Kelenteng Hong San Ko Tee Juliani kemarin (10/1).

Sebelum tumpengan, umat melekan.

“Bentuknya macam-macam,” jelasnya. (uji/ari)

Monas Masih Dipadati Pengunjung

“Udah muter tadi, pintunya ditutup semua.

“Sekali putaran Rp 20 ribu. Hari biasa, lima putaran aja belum tentu. Lumayanlah, rezeki tahun baru, haha,” katanya sambil tertawa lepas. (ING)

W Java declares formation of tourism board

Bandung, W Java (ANTARA News) - The West Java provincial administration here Tuesday declared the formation of a West Java Tourism Board in connection with the launching of Visit Indonesia Year 2008 by the central government.

“The board will be the spearhead of any central and provincial government initiative to develop West Java`s tourism sector. We will do it from now on,” head of the West Java Tourism and Culture Office HI Budhiyana said.

The board would facilitate efforts to improve West Java`s performance in the tourism sector as well as serve as a think-tank on how the sector needs to be developed in the future, he said.

In conjunction with the launching of Visit-Indonesia Year 2008 at national level, West Java had also proclaimed a Visit West Java Year 2008 with the purpose of increasing the number of tourist arrivals in the province.

“The tourism sector saw significant growth in 2007. The year was the strategic start to raise the foreign tourist arrival target in 2008,” he said.

He admitted so far the mix of tourists visiting West Java was still dominated by domestic tourists who accounted for as much 96 percent of the total number of tourist arrivals in West Java in 2007.

In 2008, the challenge and strategy in West Java`s tourism development efforts would be aimed at developing community-based tourism.

He said the tourism sector in West Java contributed some Rp19.4 trillion to the province`s revenues in 2007 while the target had been set at Rp22 trillion.

In 2007, the number of foreign tourists visiting West Java reached 350,000 compared to the target set at 500,000, he added.

He said efforts would be made to stimulate the souvenir industry in support of the West Java-Visit Year.(*)

Fewer tourists visit Karimunjawa

Suherdjoko and Yemris Fointuna, The Jakarta Post, Jepara, Kupang

High waves and heavy storms along the north coast of Java over the last few days have decreased the number of visitors to Karimunjawa islands, about 120 kilometers north of Semarang in Central Java.

“Ferries that usually serve the route from Semarang and Jepara to Karimunjawa have been forced to stop operation. That’s why the number of tourist arrivals has shrunk over the past few days,” said Abdul Muin, 60, the owner of a homestay in Karimunjawa.

Abdul said under normal conditions hundreds of domestic and international tourists visited Karimunjawa every weekend.

Semarang Meteorology and Geophysics Agency reported waves in the Java Sea reached up to 2.5-3.5 meters with winds up to 30 knots.

“We warn all ferries not to sail due to the bad weather. We predict these conditions will last up to the end of January,” said head of climatology at the agency, M Chaeran, on Saturday.

Abdul said the number of tourist arrivals would be back to normal in February or March as the waves returned to normal.

It was also reported that floods in Kudus, Central Java, had decreased, although they still threatened a number of districts on the north coast of Java, such as Jati, Mejobo and Kaliwungu.

The Central Java Communication and Information Agency reported the floods had inundated 1,241 houses and damaged more than 1,000 hectares of farmland in Grobogan alone.

Grobogan is one of a number of cities affected by the recent flooding caused by overflow from the Bengawan Solo River.

Spokesman of the Central Java province administration Agus Utomo said the worst-affected area was Undaan district in Kudus regency.

Central Java Governor Ali Mufiz asked the central government to help the province in overcoming flood problems by constructing reservoirs and strengthening all embankments along large rivers in Central Java.

Meanwhile, it was reported from Palu in Central Sulawesi that heavy storms damaged a tower and uprooted trees on Saturday evening, causing traffic jams in a number of locations. There were no casualties reported.

Palu Meteorology and Geophysics Agency predicted bad weather would last until the middle of January.

Tjatur Iswahyuanto of the Kupang Meteorology and Geophysics Agency warned East Nusa Tenggara residents Sunday to be careful of the bad weather.

He said high waves and heavy storms would continue for the next few days.

He also warned all ferries not to sail through Flores Sea, Banda Sea and Timor Sea due to high waves that could reach up to seven meters, while in other coastal areas the waves could reach three to four meters.

The bad weather forced ferries to cease operation and prevented fishermen from going to the sea.

Heavy rain and storms inundated 192 houses and more than 50 hectares of farmland in Kakuluk Mesak district in Belu regency. It also caused a clean water shortage throughout the region.

From North Central Timor regency it was reported the flood that swept the region had inundated 283 houses. The water level was still around 50-100 centimeters.

Ruslan Sangadji contributed to this article from Palu, Central Sulawesi.

Java villagers flee fresh mudflow

Villagers on the Indonesian island of Java have had to flee a wave of volcanic mud for the second time in less than two years.

While heavy monsoon rains caused the latest breachr, many residents are blaming man-made activity for creating the danger in the first place.

Residents of Ketapang Keres village in East Java fled their homes in panic as hot, foul smelling mud inundated their houses late last week after the mud volcano breached the barriers built to contain it.

Railway tracks and a major road near Porong village were partially submerged before the watery mud receded.

Workers struggled to close the gap in the barrier which had been built after relentless mudflows near Indonesia’s second-largest city, Surabaya, forced more than 15,000 people to flee in 2006.

Since then thousands of homes, schools and factories have been swamped.

Environmentalists say a company called Lapindo that was drilling for gas at the time, started the disaster in 2006.

An investigation found that the company had indeed violated drilling rules, but in December a court cleared Lapindo of any wrongdoing, saying an earthquake that happened two days before the drilling started was to blame.

Minister’s company

Lapindo is partly owned by the family of Aburizal Bakrie, a cabinet minister and businessman whose family last year topped a Forbes’ magazine list of Indonesia’s richest.

The government has tried several schemes to halt the mudflow, including trying to channel the mud to sea and dropping giant concrete balls into the crater, but all attempts have failed.

Engineers built the dams to hold back the sludge, but they were about to overflow even before heavy rains started pounding the area several weeks ago.

Ahmad Zulkarnain, a spokesman for the government body managing the mudflow, said they had been unable to reinforce the 5-metre high dam because there has been no agreement on compensation with the owner of the land where the dam is situated.

The government ordered Lapindo to pay $403.6m in compensation to the victims and to cover the damage.

Some victims have accepted compensation but thousands of others still living in makeshift shelters are frustrated and angry.

And those affected last week “will not receive any compensation”, Imam Utomo, the regional governor, said.

The government has run out of ideas and money to stop the tide, and with 50 Olympic-sized swimming pools of fresh mud surfacing every day, no one knows when the flow will end.

Malang’s educators get online lessons

Wahyoe Boediwardhana, The Jakarta Post, Malang

The front yard at SMK 4 state vocational school in East Java’s city of Malang was quite crowded — but not with students.

Instead, some 1,200 teachers from across Malang were gathered to attend information and communications technology training (ICT).

School vice principal Sri Oentari said participants gathered in the school’s large hall before they were divided according to their respective skills into four large groups including principals, IT tutors, administrative staffers and librarians.

These groups were further divided again into 20 groups, each comprising of 60 persons. Each group attended internet training for three days, led by a trainer from SMK 4.

“This training will later be related closely with the network education program we are establishing,” Sri told The Jakarta Post in mid December.

Head of Malang’s education office M Shofwan said teachers taking part in the training had come from some 300 different schools across Malang, including private and state elementary schools, as well as junior and senior high schools.

“They are trained on ICT for four months, until March, 2008,” Shofwan said.

Internet training for teachers in Malang today was very important, said Shofwan, because some 500 schools, or 80 percent of schools in the city, had already been connected to the internet.

“We estimate that by the end of 2008 all schools will be linked,” said Shofwan.

“This is a breakthrough and it will enhance the narrow outlook of educators and students thus far.”

Internet connection for all schools, Shofwan said, allowed greater and faster access to education materials from the country’s ministry of education.

Shofwan said it would also see schools less dependent on paper and see students less likely to spend their pocket money at internet cafes or kiosks where he said they had access to pornographic sites.

He said the roll-out of internet access and e-learning programs for the city’s schools would soon encourage students to use computers to complete and submit their homework online.

Students and tutors would also have access online to National Examination model questions posted by the National Education Ministry through its official website.

“The network program is designed to be able to overcome the scarcity of teachers,” Shofwan said.

“For example, other schools can access English lessons taught by a a good English teacher via teleconference,” he said.

At the moment however Shofwan said each school was obliged to procure their own computers, and pay for their own internet access.

Malang’s administration said it was working together with PT Telkom state telecommunications company to provide telephone and internet links.

PT Telkom’s East Java communications manager Djadi Soegiarto said, “This is in line with the agreement between Telkom and the education office in 2006″.

“Telkom has been assigned to provide infrastructure for the National Education Network and to provide information access in schools as well as training programs,” Djadi said.

“At a bandwidth of 200 megabytes per second, internet access in Jakarta can be used to support long-distance learning programs as well as online data procurement to students and teachers.”

Shofwan said obstacles the education system was facing included teachers’ and students’ inability to want or accept change.

“I often hear people say they can still live and carry out activities without the internet,” Shofwan said.

But he said they would need to fight for change.

“Now is different from before.”

Schools in Malang have established links, especially with education institutions in Singapore, Belgium, the United States, Germany, Malaysia and the Netherlands, thanks to internet access.

“Representatives from contacts made in Belgium come to Malang every three to four months to offer assistance and provide supporting equipment, such as computers,” Shofwan said.

Melihat Pesta Pernikahan Hindu di Pura Giri Wilis Nganjuk

Sesuai Warigo, Berlangsung 1 Januari Pukul 11.00

Sambil terus-menerus membunyikan lonceng kecilnya.

Indonesia marks new year with fire crackers, religious prayers

Jakarta - Indonesians lit fire crackers, held religious ceremonies and musical events to mark the dawn of the New Year as the country’s president urged nations to draw a lesson from past experience to start 2008. Hundreds of thousands of people packed several locations to celebrate the New Year, including the Monas Monument in downtown Jakarta, Ancol beach area in northern Jakarta and the Indonesian Miniature Park in eastern Jakarta, which where highlighted by spectacular fireworks. At a number of mosques in the capital of more than 12 million people, religious groups were holding an all-night vigil, praying for peace and calling on all Muslims in the country to get closer to God following intermittent natural disasters throughout the year. In contrast to the capital, tens of thousands of residents in the country’s densely populated Central Java and East Java provinces celebrated the new year in mourning and misery as days of torrential rains triggered landslides and heavy floodings. President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in a New Year’s message called all segments of the Indonesian population to draw a lesson from past experience as an introspection to start the new year, saying that an improvement in past shortcomings should be made while maintaining the good achievements in entering the future. “Thus, we step into 2008 with an optimism and stronger self confidence, and believe that the country’s development is already on the right track,” Yudhoyono said after attending prayer on New Year’s Eve at a mosque at the presidential palace complex. Vice President Jusuf Kalla, who led a prayer function for the victims of 2007 natural disasters at a mosque near his residence, expressed hope that there would be less disasters in 2008, the state-run Antara news agency reported. More than 130 people have died or remain missing and tens of thousands were left homeless after the floods and a series of landslides buried houses in Central Java and East Java last week, while floods waters cut off roads and paralyzed land communications to a number of cities on Indonesia’s crowded island. National police chief General Sutanto said the new year celebration went through peacefully, with no violence or bomb threats reported across the country. In the capital Jakarta, as many as 17,000 police officers were deployed to ensure a safe New Year’s celebration.

Jalan Diponegoro Jadi Tempat Parkir

Dampaknya, lahan parkir KBS tak mampu menampung kendaraan pengunjung.

Calo, lanjut Agus, memang pandai membaca peluang. (top/yen/nw)
