Jagat Karana Temple, Surabaya

The Grand Jagat Karana Temple is opened first time by The Staff Chief of KODAMAR V Maritime Commodore R. Sahiran at Saraswati day Saturday Umanis Wu Watugunung 29 November 1969. This temple is located in Lumba-Lumba Street 1 Surabaya. This temple had a restoration, based of Wahono support and declared on 26 September 1987. Above the inscription is written a sentence that say:

Pura Agung Jagat Karana
Saniscara Umanis Watugunung
Tang - ping 3 sasih kapat 1909 C
Bale manusya yadnya

The various religious activities of Hindu believer in Surabaya are often focused here. They are Galungan, Kuningan, Saraswati, Melasti, Pecaruan and other. The other three prohibitions is observe the masterpiece or don’t have a work, observe lelungan or don’t travel, and observe lelanguan or don’t enjoy the entertainment.

As does other religion believer who greet the New Year with cleanness heart and mind, hence Hindu believer also perform a praying ceremony ngembak geni in Segara Temple, Kenjeran, Surabaya. The ceremony that becomes an action chains to greet this Saka New Year is filled with dharma santi or apologized each Hindu member.

Klenteng Sanggar Agung: Tri Dharma members that is Buddhist, Konghucu and Taoisme in Surabaya


Date of 1 months 1 at almanac rembulan or Imlek (The Chinese New Year), have big meaning for ethnical Tionghoa, and Tri Dharma members, that is Buddha, Konghucu, and Tao. Imlek which have been specified to become national red-letter day four years ago, now is commemorated openly in Sanggar Agung, kind of Kelenteng (Chinese Temple), a religious place with China (cultural) nuance.
The Reality of Imlek is to thank the goodness coming of New Year. Usually the kelenteng is crowded visited by the believer at night nearing Imlek.


Though identical with Tri Dharma and ethnical China members, simply Sanggar Agung is not then closed for public, can be visited every time, by every person, without differentiating tribe and religion. Sanggar Agung is believer place of Tri Dharma observance. It is located in Ria Kenjeran Beach precisely in Sukolilo Street 100 Surabaya.

When stepping the foot to step into Sanggar Agung, the visitor will meet altar in honor of the ancestors. This altar is meant that each and everyone always remember the ancestors, the old fellows who have died. Along with China mores, old fellow get high position in family.

Respect the old fellow, also mean respect the example and own self. Visitor can meet some statues, which is the materialization of the deities in China tradition. Those statues generally symbolize certain history with reference of each deity excellence. But, always there are a statue or deity that majored each kelenteng.
