“ Revitalization Of Kembang Jepun Area Into A Walk-Street And Wall Street “
October 5th, 2006
The oldest history described Surabaya as a village by the river that functioned as a crossing land. Since the 14Th century many people from various backgrounds of ethnics had treaded with the local villagers. The village was soon became a harbor city. People of the Chinese background first set foot in Surabaya during Sriwijaya Kingdom. They had occupied eastern part of Kalimas. They inhabited in an area known as Jalan Kembang Jepun, and also known as Chinatown.
The rapid growth of Surabaya has changed the role of it. Kembang Jepun once as the city icon gradually losing its identity. Actually Surabaya needs another icon, that should be created from its glorious past. It takes time to have such a new icon. A revival should be made and engineered at the same location. A kind of resurrection should be generated from the fame of Kembang Jepun.
If big cities in the world always have particular spot where many visitors are looking forward to just walk around it, Surabaya does not have to try hard to find the spot. Most cities have Chinatown however Surabaya, as the history told has already had it since a long time ago, Kembang Jepun.
The initial idea to give new life to the Kembang Jepun area during the night hours came from the City Government of Surabaya. But since the government was fail to make the plan happened and nor being able to create the most conducive situation for the vendors, Kembang Jepun was left alone.
The program for revitalization finally comes from the private sector. Their motivation is merely because of their concern for their city and social awareness. The effort of revitalizing Kembang Jepun is an interesting synergy between the city government and its citizen. And it is a good start to revitalize in the old Kembang Jepun area with evening meals.
