Komodo National Park, established in 1900 is one of the most valuable marine protected areas in Indonesia.
With hundreds of hard coral species, several times more than in the entire Caribbean, the region of Komodo is considered one of the richest coral reef areas in the country.
This region is one of the most extravagant dive locations in the world, with over 1000 species of fish faunas. The current-swept islands, rocks and sea-mounds in the center of the straits form unique locations for the observation of both sea and pelagic marine life. They can be observed circling around rocks that are covered by the most colorful corals.

Commonly observed species of large fish are giant trevally, Spanish mackerel, dogthooth tuna, various species of sharks (whitetip, blacktip, gray reef, nurse and bamboo), manta rays and spotted eagle rays, bumperhead parrotfish and Napoleon wrasses. Schooling fish, which are found in stunning numbers around the sea-mounds are rainbow runners, bigeye trevallies, eastern little tuna, surgeon fish and fusiliers.
The undisturbed corals on the sea-mounds are home to an incredible diversity of smaller reef fish and invertebrates.
The enormous density of colorful basslets (small reef fish also called "anthias") make it easy to understand why this area has been called the "Anthias Capital of the World".
Large groupers (up to 100kg) and stingrays can often be seen at

the lower parts (20 to 50 m) of the reef slopes.

Whales can be observed migrating through the straits and sometimes resting in the bays during the months of October through January. The dugong or sea cows, a close relative of the American manatee, are present year-round although rare. Dolphins can be found in the park or surrounding deep-see areas on almost every day of the year. Green sea, hawksbill and loggerhead turtles are seen year-round.
The giant but harmless whale sharks (up to 12m long) have been sighted on the southern coastline and in bays throughout of the park, most common during the month of December.
Manta rays are plentiful and can be seen near the steep drop-offs,

circling around the current-swept areas, and approached to within touching distance.

Allow the professionals at ProDive Komodo to take you on a journey where you will capture memories for a lifetime.

We at ProDive Komodo wish to thank The National Conservancy, our friends and companions in the preservation of this magnificent region, for their assistance in compiling this information.
