Holy Place of Muslim Missionaries
SEMARANG
This stone panel, now on display in the Museum of Central Java, was collected from the ruins of the 16th century mosque at Mantingan, Jepara. It is particularly interesting because it is carved on two sides, each of which represents a different historical period. The scende depicted here formed part of a Hindhu/Buddhist structure. When the mosque was built, the stone was reversed and recarved with an abstrct motif conforming to Islamic design principles, the 'rear' face of the panel thus becoming hidden from sight. This is perhaps a unique case of recycling.
